ABOUT LAND VALUES

Land Values is a photographic investigation into the different ways in which we might take value from land, rather than necessarily highlighting how we might be exploiting it.  The first project on this theme is 'VALUING LAND: through engagement & play', which is a personal perspective on how my own value for land might have been formed and how it might have been different in today's circumstances.

Other projects developed on this theme include 'VALUING LAND: through transformation & conservation', which looks at how exploited land can be transformed back to its natural state and valued for completely different and more positive reasons; and 'VALUING LAND: through its environmental contribution', which questions whether our value for urban trees extends beyond serving humanity's needs.

Land Values is thus the theme from which I intend to broaden this investigation and further develop this body of work.

SHOWCASE:

VALUING LAND:

through transformation & conservation

North Sands is a coastal strip between Hartlepool and Sunderland which, at the time of taking these images in 2012, was on the edge of change and transformation.  It is an example of how an area of heavily exploited land still has the potential, with a little help, to transform back to its natural state and be valued for completely different, and more positive, reasons.

VALUING LAND:

Trees form an integral part of most urban landscapes, but as these places are mainly designed to serve humanity's needs does the value of urban trees ever extend beyond serving those needs?

for it's environmental contribution

I'd love to hear of any comments you have about Land Values, any suggestions on how I could develop this work further, or even ideas / thoughts on ways to further improve the design of this website.

VALUING LAND:

through engagement & play

The following images form a personal perspective on how land formed an important part of my play as a child, and then compares this with the opportunities presented today from a place I had yet to know.  It does so by juxtaposing images of the place where I grew up in Thornhill, West Yorkshire with a new place I had recently moved to in Glasgow.
